Perforce Software Releases Version 2001.1 of Perforce, The Software Configuration Management System
Latest release supports larger development projects
ALAMEDA, Calif., July 10, 2001 /PRNewswire/ -- Perforce Software today announced the availability of version 2001.1 of its Software Configuration Management (SCM) system. This new version offers improved performance and scalability, and easier cross-platform development -- all hallmarks of the Perforce SCM system.
Perforce 2001.1 improvements include the following:
- Performance and scalability. Changes to the underlying database mean that Perforce SCM now overcomes file size limits imposed by certain platforms and supports even larger installations. Perforce 2001.1 also enhances the overall performance of the database and speeds administrative operations such as backup and recovery.
- Flexibility. Perforce 2001.1 incorporates the ability to map file types to locking models and now supports a pessimistic exclusive lock for files checked out for edit. Along with the existing optimistic approach, users can now choose how files are checked out based on the type of file.
- Version control for non-developers. Perforce 2001.1 incorporates P4FTP, an FTP server that allows any FTP client to access files in Perforce depots. Non-Perforce users can use conventional FTP tools to download or check-in/out files in a Perforce repository. It also allows many HTML authoring tools to store, retrieve and version the files used to design and construct Web sites.
- Personalized GUI. The Perforce Windows GUI, P4Win, now supports personalization by the user. For instance, developers can add personal menu items to interface with other tools and scripts, and views of the Perforce database can be customized.
- Direct access from WebGain's Visual Cafe 4.2. P4SCC, the Perforce SCC Plug-in that supports Microsoft's Source Code Control (SCC) interface, now supports Visual Cafe 4.2.
- Python support for automated administrative tasks. The Perforce SCM database can now exchange marshalled Python dictionary objects with external Python scripts.
"This release has been built upon customer feedback and so we know that each and every improvement is relevant to developers," said Christopher Seiwald, president and chief technology officer at Perforce Software. "Perforce 2001.1 does exactly what it should, providing an environment that allows fast effective development across multiple platforms within teams of two to more than two thousand."
