Perforce Software Integrates Software Development Tool with Bugzilla to Give Development Teams More Efficiency with Less Effort

Perforce Software, Inc. today announced that its Software Configuration Management (SCM) system now supports the Bugzilla defect tracking system via the Perforce Defect Tracking Integration kit (P4DTI). This integration enables developers to complete their work in Perforce while automatically keeping managers and QA departments in the loop with Bugzilla through tracking, workflow, and reports.

Perforce SCM is a comprehensive system that helps software development teams efficiently manage large, complex development projects across multiple operating system platforms. Bugzilla is an open source database for reporting and tracking bugs and Perforce offers free licenses for open-source development projects.

"This integration smoothes out the engineering workflow by capturing a complete history of the relationship between source code changes and reported issues," said Rohit Dube, engineer and founder of Xebeo Communications, Inc. "We cannot afford to lose this knowledge which ultimately improves our product delivery time."

Perforce developed the Perforce Defect Tracking Integration kit (P4DTI), which is now available as part of the complete Perforce SCM system, for this integration. With P4DTI, developers can perform routine defect resolution tasks from within a Perforce client - or their IDE - without switching to Bugzilla and entering duplicate information. The Bugzilla database remains consistent with the changes made in Perforce SCM, by providing managers accurate and up-to-date project status information, making it easy to find out why changes were made, locate work that was done to resolve issues, and generate reports tying issues to specific files or code lines.

"Defect tracking is absolutely crucial to the software management process," said Nigel Chanter, chief operating officer of Perforce Software. "The integration of Bugzilla's defect tracker and our SCM is proof of our mantra: that tools must help development teams work more efficiently with the apps they like best - without getting in their way."

Availability and Pricing

P4DTI for Bugzilla is free and is available for download with a licensed or two-user Perforce Server. All project software and documentation is available on the Perforce Web site.

About Bugzilla

Bugzilla's first installation was at mozilla.org. Since then, however, several companies - private and public, open source and commercial - have begun using it to track software defects. It lets people report bugs and assigns these bugs to the appropriate developers. Developers can use Bugzilla to keep a to-do list as well as to prioritize, schedule and track dependencies. Bugzilla also consists of an HTML front end to perform queries into the database. The source code to the Bugzilla tool itself is available on the project's site.
