Perforce SCM Wins Game Developer Award
Game Developer Magazine Honors Advancements and Innovation in
Game Development Tools
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Dec. 10, 2001 - CMP Media's Game Developer magazine today announced its list of winners for the fourth annual Front Line Awards, honoring excellence and innovation in tools for game development in 2001. Winners are selected in categories encompassing programming, art, audio and production tools. The winners of the Front Line Awards will be profiled in the January 2002 issue of Game Developer magazine, available on newsstands beginning December 28, 2001.
"As games have become more and more sophisticated over the years, so have the development tools used to make them," said Jennifer Olsen, editor-in-chief, Game Developer magazine. "The software and hardware companies who have answered the call for tools that enable faster and more efficient game creation deserve to be recognized for their efforts in advancing the state of the art. Game Developer magazine's Front Line Awards do just that."
Front Line Award winners were determined by a panel of industry-leading game developers specializing in the fields relevant to each category. Products were nominated in the various categories by Game Developer's editors, judges, and readers, from which finalists were selected and evaluated based on criteria such as utility, value, and innovation.
Winners in the various categories include:
Programming
Araxis: Merge
Perforce Software: Perforce SCM
Rational: Quantify
Art
Alias|Wavefront: Maya 4
Discreet: 3ds Max 4.2
Right Hemisphere: Deep Paint 3D

In addition to the Front Line Award category winners, each year one product is inducted into the Front Line Awards Hall of Fame. The inductee is chosen for its outstanding contribution to the game development industry.
This year's honor was presented to the original Voodoo 3D card, developed by 3Dfx. Though 3Dfx is no longer in business, the first Voodoo graphics cards, along with 3Dfx's Glide API, gave game developers unprecedented freedom to take advantage of 3D acceleration in their games and deliver them on affordable consumer hardware.
