More Than 6,000 Game Developers Use Perforce
To Manage Their Digital Assets

The Perforce Software Configuration Management System experiences a surge in popularity since E3 2002

Perforce Software, Inc. announced today, at the 2003 Electronic Entertainment Exposition, a threefold increase in the number of game developers using the Perforce Software Configuration Management (SCM) system to manage their digital assets. To date, more than 6,000 game developers use Perforce SCM, up from 2,000 licenses in May of 2002. Perforce has established a major presence in the games market because it helps shorten time to market for new quality titles.

"We've heard directly from game creators that Perforce cuts their development time by improving real-time collaboration, greatly reducing the effects of an otherwise protracted feedback loop," said Christopher Seiwald, founder and chief technology officer of Perforce Software. "Perforce enables coders and artists to see instantly the results of changes made by other users as they occur. This dramatically cuts down on the time between when a modification is made and when its effect is felt."

Perforce SCM is a powerful digital asset management (DAM) system that provides greater accuracy, control, and productivity to the game design and development process, with significantly reduced administrative overhead. The key advantage is that changes are applied across the entire production pipeline - regardless of the scale or geographical split of the teams involved, thereby allowing teams to quickly, efficiently, and easily manage interdependencies between changes. With Perforce, developers can manage multiple versions of games and meet specific schedule and feature requirements.

Digital Extremes Uses Perforce to Manage Digital Assets for Unreal Tournament 2003 with Epic Games and Unreal Championship for Microsoft Xbox

"I am a big fan of Perforce, which I refer to as our 'hub for everything'," said Steve Sinclair, lead programmer and DAM evangelist at Digital Extremes. "We store all our source code, art assets, development documentation and even our web content in Perforce."

"When we collaborate on games, as we did recently with Epic and Microsoft, our productivity is radically improved by having a combined asset management repository [Perforce] for all assets. We can quickly produce builds to share with partners, or absorb their contributed libraries. And, trusted partners can access and update the code base in real time without the risk of losing anyone's changes. With Perforce, team members can confidently return to any consistent state for all project files."

Other game companies using Perforce for DAM include Electronics Arts, Infogrames, Zoonami, Maxis, Sony Online Entertainment, Ubisoft and Crystal Dynamics, Sports Interactive, Lionhead Studios (Black & White), Monolith Productions (No One Lives Forever), Westwood Studios (Command & Conquer), Valve Software (Half-Life), Gas Powered Games (Dungeon Siege), and Relic Entertainment (Impossible Creatures).
