Perforce Gives Administrators More Control With New Addition
To Its Software Configuration Management System

Perforce Software Inc., today announced the release of version 2003.1 of its Fast Software Configuration Management (SCM) System. Building on an established reputation for easy administration, Perforce 2003.1 features a new P4 Monitor utility, providing administrators greater visibility and control over the SCM processes running in the Perforce Server. P4 Monitor saves time by providing easier access to process information previously identified at the operating system level.

Specifically, the P4 Monitor utility provides:

  • Diagnosis of Performance Issues. Now system administrators can maximize the Perforce Server's resources by determining who is executing a taxing command. Monitor information includes the command, the supporting arguments submitted, and the precise time elapsed since the command was executed.
  • Control of Process Lifespan. P4 Monitor can target and terminate problematic processes without diminishing a teams' productivity. Taxing commands can be terminated without interrupting the Perforce Server.

"Over the years our product has come to be recognized, by both our customers and the software industry at large, for its incredible speed and ease of use," explained Christopher Seiwald, president and chief technology officer of Perforce Software. "So, when our customers requested a feature that would make Perforce even easier to administer, we listened and acted. We know developers want to focus on writing code and not configuring and maintaining their SCM environment."

Symantec Uses One Part-Time Administrator For More Than 1,100 Users

Easy administration is a hallmark of Perforce SCM. Perforce SCM is quick to install and features a self-maintaining database tuned for SCM operations, as well as a communication protocol that is not reliant on the addition of any supporting file systems.

"Supporting over 1,100 users around the globe, we only use one part-time person to administer Perforce along with a few managers who have administrative access to implement some protections," explained Russell Jackson, senior manager of configuration management for Symantec (Nasdaq: SYMC).
