TTPCom Deploys Perforce To Enable Globally Distributed Development
Perforce deployed at nine TTPCom sites worldwide to enable distributed design and development of wireless communications intellectual property
ALAMEDA, Calif., January 13, 2004 - Perforce Software today announced that its Software Configuration Management (SCM) tool, Perforce SCM, has been selected by TTPCom Ltd., a world leader in the design and development of wireless communications intellectual property for silicon and handset manufacturers.
TTPCom has deployed Perforce across its sites in the United Kingdom, as well as in the United States, China, Singapore, France, and Denmark. Of TTPCom's 500 employees worldwide, approximately 350 are Perforce users.
Peter Anderson, software configuration management manager at TTPCom, said, "There are a number of things we like about Perforce, from its simple and fast installation, ease of roll-out and reliability, through to the excellent support and documentation. Prior to deploying Perforce, we simply couldn't do remote syncing, so you can certainly say that Perforce has revolutionized our ability to see code in remote offices. This of course means that we can now contemplate distributed development around the world, which we couldn't do before."
TTPCom has its main Perforce server and three others in the UK, and has Perforce proxy servers deployed in: Boston; Aalborg, Denmark; Shanghai, China; and Singapore. The Perforce Proxy, P4P, improves performance by mediating between Perforce clients and servers to cache frequently transmitted file revisions. By intercepting requests for cached file revisions, P4P reduces demand on the Perforce server and network, making it an excellent tool for distributed development, especially where bandwidth to remote sites is limited.
Perforce has also enabled TTPCom to manage its customer releases more effectively. By directly querying the Perforce Server through the Perforce Reporting System (P4Report), it is possible to track metrics such as how many changes are in a release or which files developers are editing. The Perforce SQL Command-Line Client (P4SQL) is also included with P4Report, and can be used to execute SQL statements either interactively or via scripts. P4Report improves visibility - it enables developers and customers to more readily see what has been integrated, and hence make more timely decisions.
Dave Robertson, director of European operations at Perforce Software, said, "TTPCom has a complex set of requirements with respect to managing and developing its intellectual property assets. Features such as Perforce Proxy, our open application interface, P4Report, and remote depots, combined with Perforce's inherent speed and robustness, enable TTPCom to easily customize Perforce and meet its specific design and development needs."
