Perforce Integrates Its Fast Software Configuration Management System
With IBM's WebSphere Studio and Eclipse

Refactoring is built in to Perforce's powerful source control integration

Perforce Software today announced the availability of its Fast Software Configuration Management (SCM) system for IBM's WebSphere Studio Application Developer and Eclipse. The Perforce Plug-in for WebSphere Studio and the Eclipse Platform, known as P4WSAD, gives developers easy access to Perforce SCM from within any of the WebSphere Studio developer tools. P4WSAD also gives Eclipse developers a complete SCM integration (see screenshot).

"The flexible and highly scriptable nature of Perforce allowed us to develop a tight integration with WSAD and Eclipse," explained Christopher Seiwald, president and chief technology officer of Perforce Software. "We have many WebSphere users who rely on Perforce and we're happy to make it all work together."

Specifically, P4WSAD allows access to Perforce from within Eclipse 2.0.2 or higher and any of the WebSphere Studio WorkBench family of products, which includes: WebSphere Studio 2.0.3 or higher; WebSphere Studio Application Developer 5 or higher; WebSphere Studio Site Developer 5 or higher; WebSphere Studio Homepage Builder 6 or higher.

P4WSAD automatically versions refactored files

"Perforce's P4WSAD plug-in has achieved a high degree of integration with the Eclipse environment that seamlessly provides access to the SCM features we require," said Bill Langlais, vice president of development for Percussion Software, an enterprise content management software supplier. "With its support for refactoring, Perforce enables our developers to work faster and more accurately when using Eclipse."

Refactoring is a powerful development technique for automating the incorporation of changes to the structure of a program without altering its functionality. The P4WSAD integration fully supports the refactoring functionality of the Eclipse and WSAD environments. When a refactoring task is performed, all changes to the affected files are automatically included in the Perforce system.

In addition to refactoring, P4WSAD provides easy access to all basic Perforce functions including:

  • Automatic grouping of checked out files into logical transactional units called changelists;
  • Support for automatic file checkout and numbered changelists;
  • Quick access to complete file history;
  • Full support of collaborative development with the ability to merge files;
  • Decorations for Perforce-managed files, providing quick and easy file status; and,
  • A built-in file compare utility and defect tracking support.
