Perforce Software Extends Version Control Support to SOFTIMAGE|XS™

Popular 3-D animation modeling tool supported along with 3ds max, Maya, and Photoshop

Perforce Software today announced a new integration between Perforce, the Fast Software Configuration Management (SCM) System, and SOFTIMAGE|XSI, a 3-D modeling and animation solution for the film, broadcast, post-production and interactive entertainment industries.

Extending Perforce's version control functionality to SOFTIMAGE|XSI enables artists to more efficiently version, store and manage their computer graphics, 3-D animation, and visual effects from within the familiar 3-D design tool.

First introduced in 2004, the Perforce Plug-in for Graphical Tools (P4GT) provides artists seamless access to version control from within 3ds max, Maya, and Photoshop. Fully integrated with Perforce, P4GT is an easy to install plug-in that requires no special setup knowledge from the user.

"This integration is one in a series of enhancements over the last year specifically targeting the games and interactive entertainment industries," said Nigel Chanter, chief operating officer of Perforce Software. "We have become increasingly popular among game developers and digital artists for several reasons: Perforce offers solid version control capabilities from within a variety of graphics environments; Perforce is fast and doesn't slow down the creative process; and Perforce easily manages the large size of graphical files."

From a Perforce drop-down menu, users of SOFTIMAGE|XSI, Photoshop, 3ds max, and Maya, can:

  • Know precisely which files are managed by Perforce.
  • Access multiple versions of their work.
  • Check files in and out.
  • View a complete revision history of all digital assets without having to leave the graphical tool's familiar environment.
  • See the status of all other digital assets and software code in the Perforce repository.

Availability & Pricing

P4GT will include support for SOFTIMAGE|XSI in mid-November for Microsoft Windows 2000 and Microsoft Windows XP platforms. It requires Perforce Server version 2004.2 or later. There are no special licenses to purchase, install, or configure.
