Perforce Training

To help you get the most from your use of Perforce, we offer regularly scheduled public classes for beginners, advanced users, and administrators at our training facilities, as well as on-site training at your premises. Our experienced instructors teach you about Perforce in a well-paced classroom environment, with ample hands-on exercises.

We currently offer two Perforce training courses; both course descriptions are outlined below.

Introduction to Perforce for Users and Administrators

Overview

This is an in-depth, command-line oriented investigation of how to use and administer Perforce. The course teaches SCM fundamentals using the Perforce Command-Line Client, which are then later applied to the use of the GUI client, P4V.

  • Software development or system administration experience
  • Familiar with at least one operating system

Course Topics

  • Perforce system overview and user interfaces
  • Understanding depots, workspaces, and client view maps
  • Basic user operations: creating workspaces, working with files and changelists, submitting changelists, keeping workspaces in sync with the depot
  • Parallel development: merging files, resolving file conflicts
  • Branching and codeline management: creating branches, integrating changes between branches, using named branch views
  • User protections and access permissions
  • Process support with changelists, labels, jobs and the change review daemon
  • Perforce metadata reporting techniques
  • System administration: installation, resource management, database archiving procedure, and triggers
  • Perforce GUI demonstration

Perforce Best Practices for Codeline Management and Scripting

Overview

This course presents best practices for codeline management that are important for all users who want to implement Perforce to its best advantage. It also covers scripting to support the automation of administrative and workflow-related processes.

  • Completion of "Introduction to Perforce for Users and Administrators" course or equivalent experience
  • Experience with a scripting language

Course Objectives

Learn how to extend your expertise in the area of managing codelines, and provide techniques for automating typical SCM workflow processes

  • Recommended strategies for organizing your codelines
  • Managing codelines for parallel development, collaboration, and performance
  • How best to perform common codeline operations
  • Writing scripts using the command-line client program and the Perforce Perl API
  • Send email notifications via the Perforce review daemon
  • Process support using triggers
  • Auditing metadata: wrappers and administrative scripts
  • Maintaining server performance as the database grows

Upon acceptance, each registrant will be emailed a confirmation. Directions to the training facility and a list of recommended hotels will be included in the confirmation.

Cancellation Policy

Registrations cancelled less than fifteen business days prior to the start of the class are subject to a 50% cancellation fee. Registrants who hold reservations and fail to attend will be invoiced in full.

Perforce reserves the right to cancel any class ten business days prior to the start date of the class. In such instances, our liability is limited to the full refund of the registration fee.

On-Site and Custom Classes

Perforce Software offers on-site and custom classes led by our full-time training staff. Independent Perforce Certified Trainers offer on-site classes as well and can be contacted directly. For more information, write to training@perforce.com.
