Unrivaled Scale and Performance
When Git-based and legacy tools hit their limits, Perforce P4 keeps delivering. Our version control platform handles what others simply can't—from massive game assets to repositories spanning petabytes of data. As the industry standard for gaming, media & entertainment, automotive, and semiconductor fields, P4 is trusted by technical leaders who need a solution that scales.
Built for AI-Powered, Agent-Driven Development
Git was built for a single maintainer reviewing patches from many contributors. P4 was built for this moment and takes the opposite shape—many contributors working in parallel, into one source of truth, with a durable audit trail. That's why P4 holds up when more agents would otherwise mean more conflicts.
- Coordinate before the conflict. Agentic work moves faster than a few maintainers can reconcile. P4 gives every agent a server-side view of what's in flight, so they can spot overlapping work before duplicating it. Git has no equivalent.
- Track lineage across every operation. P4 stores history on the server, where no client operation can rewrite it. That means the full record of changes, merges, reviews, and attribution stays intact—so a human or AI reviewer can always trace how a file got to its current state.
- Proven scale in every dimension. The largest and most well-known projects in the world already run on P4—handling terabyte-sized repos and thousands of contributors without workarounds.
Compare Git vs. Perforce
See how P4 stacks up against Git on the features that matter for large, complex projects. To dive deeper, read our full comparison guide here.
Feature | | |
| In-Flight Visibility for Agents | No native way for an agent to signal what it's working on. The first signal others get is a pull request—once the file already exists. | Server-side visibility into every file open for edit, by each user or agent, with the intent they declared—so overlapping work is caught before the conflict. |
| AI Agent Integration | No native interface for AI agents; coordination patterns must be re-implemented per hosting platform. | Agents connect through the P4 MCP server and CLI, with access to version control history, data, and code reviews while respecting server permissions. |
| Security | All users have access to the entire repository. Limited audit and compliance features available (through hosting platforms like GitHub and GitLab). | Granular, file-level permissions give admins control of who can read, edit, or submit each file. Full audit trails, compliance-ready, ISO 26262 certified. |
| Conflict Resolution | Decentralized architecture requires frequent manual conflict resolution and can often result in lost work. | Exclusive file locking minimizes conflicts and prevents lost work. |
| Performance with Large Files | Requires GitLFS for files larger than 100MiB, which requires a separate provider, manual setup, and constant monitoring. Struggles with repositories exceeding 5 GB. | Scales for the most demanding environments—handling 70TB of data, 7,000 daily submits, and 45M commands on a single server—without performance degradation. |
| Game Engine Integration | Tools like Unreal Game Sync are not available. Basic source control integration is available in Unreal Engine and Unity but does not have access to specialized tools like Unreal Game Sync. | Robust integrations with Unreal Engine and Unity. Users of P4 and Unreal Engine have exclusive access to Unreal Game Sync, Horde, Robomerge, and other Epic tools. |
| Branching & Merging | Lightweight branching to support common branch-per-feature or branch-per-bug workflows. Merges and branch management can become complex with large teams and projects. | Lightweight branching to support common branch-per-feature or branch-per-bug workflows available with Sparse Streams. Many advanced branching models are available to support large-scale projects and specialized use cases. |
| Version Locally | Supports local versioning: commits, branching, and history are all available in a local repository without a network connection. | Local versioning available with P4 One: commits, branching, and history are all available in a local repository without a network connection. Users can optionally sync to a centralized P4 server to share changes and history with their team. |
Enterprise Grade Security Features and Controls
Git’s coarse permission model forces teams to split sensitive code across multiple repositories. This creates repo sprawl, duplicate tooling, and fragmented workflows. P4 solves this with granular file- and directory-level access controls so teams can collaborate securely without sacrificing structure or speed.
In 2023 alone, GitHub users accidentally exposed 12.8 million authentication and sensitive secrets in over 3 million public repositories during 2023 (GitGuardian, State of Secrets Sprawl 2024 Report). P4 helps prevent these kinds of risks with full audit trails, change tracking, and integrity monitoring—meeting the demands of PCI DSS, HIPAA, ISO 26262, and other compliance frameworks.
Whether you're managing sensitive IP as part of your game development, circuit design, credentials in financial systems, or patient data in healthcare, P4 ensures your codebase remains secure, traceable, and audit ready.
“[Perforce P4] is a comprehensive and powerful versioning solution that serves as the foundation across our entire organization. Using [P4] means that all versions of our products are traceable and auditable.”
