The State of DevOps report began over ten years ago when the term “DevOps” was in its infancy. Since its launch, over 40,000 people have participated in the survey and helped shape an industry-wide understanding of DevOps -- its successes, impact, processes, shortcomings, and how it creates business outcomes.
No matter your industry, 2025 has been a year of change. AI, no matter how much you have yet to use or understand it, has changed the way that enterprises deliver or promise to deliver software.
As with every State of DevOps report, we want to understand how this change is impacting teams.
Where does AI truly impact an organization and where is it falling short?
Does AI adoption impact teams with mature DevOps and Platform Engineering practices positively or negatively?
How are organizations implementing AI, and what type of implementation works best and where?
Does this AI implementation change the success that they are experiencing within the software delivery lifecycle?
To provide insight into these questions and more, we invite you to contribute your expertise to our State of DevOps 2025 survey. Your answers will help shape the future of the industry and ensure the report reflects the realities of modern IT operations.
The State of DevOps Survey: What You Need to Know
Before you start, here are all the important things you need to know about taking this year’s State of DevOps survey:
The survey takes around 15 minutes to complete.
The survey will include questions about software delivery practices, AI adoption and styles of adoption, and general trends within DevOps, including platform engineering and how AI is impacting continuous quality testing.
For every survey that is completed, Perforce will donate $5 dollars to a non-profit in need, with a choice between World Central Kitchen, Red Cross, and Habitat for Humanity.
This is an opportunity to influence the direction of the DevOps industry and ensure the conversation around DevOps and AI is grounded in real-world data.
Let’s take a closer look at why this year’s survey may look a bit different than previous years.
Why This Year's Survey is Different
Our reports go beyond simple metrics. They dig deep into the processes, practices, and cultural shifts that drive successful DevOps and Platform Engineering initiatives. By focusing on what truly matters, such as team collaboration, automation, and scalability in IT operations, we reveal the strategies that enable businesses to achieve impactful outcomes.
This year, we are especially interested in uncovering what makes teams that adopt DevOps or Platform Engineering frameworks more successful, how they overcome common challenges, and which processes unlock higher productivity, reliability, and innovation. By understanding these key differentiators, we aim to shine a light on the practices that not only drive performance but also create tangible value for businesses.
To provide a more focused and actionable analysis, this year’s State of DevOps is also being divided into multiple distinct reports. Alongside our primary State of DevOps report, which explores overarching trends and insights, we are introducing a testing deep-dive to uncover strategies for optimizing quality and speed in CI/CD practices.
While this report has been traditionally produced by our Puppet team, Perforce will issue this year’s report alongside the Puppet brand. Test automation experts from two of Perforce’s testing brands, Perfecto and BlazeMeter, will be issuing the testing-focused portion of this report.
The State of DevOps: Topics Under Review
This year’s State of DevOps report will provide unique insights into the most critical trends affecting IT infrastructure and operations today. Here are some of the themes that our survey will cover build a comprehensive understanding of today’s DevOps landscape:
The Human Factor in an AI-Driven DevOps Landscape
Artificial intelligence is no longer a future concept; it is an active agent of change. We are investigating how roles are shifting across development, operations, and QA teams.
- Role Evolution: Are developers and business analysts taking on more test authoring responsibilities? Is the focus for QA professionals moving toward orchestration, governance, and quality analytics?
- Process Adaptation: How have team structures and processes adapted to accommodate AI-driven tools and workflows? We aim to determine whether organizations that combine AI adoption with mature DevOps practices are achieving greater business success.
The Impact of AI on DevOps Success and Productivity
This year, we will analyze how different approaches to AI are influencing economic and productivity outcomes. The survey will differentiate between organizations using AI-powered testing platforms and those building in-house tools or using simple copilots.
Our objective is to identify which strategies yield superior results, providing a clear path for leaders who are looking for ways to optimize their technology investments. We will also examine whether teams that have embraced Platform Engineering are realizing greater benefits from AI integration.
Evolving Metrics for a New Era of Software Quality
The metrics we use to measure success must align with the pace and complexity of modern DevOps practices. This report looks to understand which metrics leading organizations define in order to measure success. Example metrics we look to uncover and validate include the following:
- Testing and Quality: We will determine if today’s testing and quality metrics include number of escaped defects, flaky test rates, and/or test cycle times.
- Operational Efficiency: Do best-in-class testing organizations measure efficiencies through key indicators such as Mean Time to Resolution (MTTR), infrastructure wait time, and device and browser coverage?
- Performance: Can testing teams connect performance Service Level Objective (SLO) pass rates to their quality efforts?
