As the Rust programming language becomes more popular in safety-critical applications, the approach to the software design process must change. This in turn affects the way that functional safety is addressed.
Functional safety standards do not specify a particular programming language — but most do require the use of coding guidelines and a language subset (mainly due to known insufficiencies in C and C++). Using Rust to achieve functional safety enables sections of the standards to be covered by the language itself, but there are still undefined behaviors and a need for a core set of guidelines.

Jill Britton has over 30 years of embedded software experience across a variety of industries. She has worked as a software engineer and manager for telecommunications, automotive, defense, and education software.
Jill is now the Director of Compliance at Perforce and is a committee member of MISRA. Jill holds a BSc in Computer Science and Statistics from Newcastle University, and a MSc in Computer Science from Brunel University London.
