Coping with the Network Blues

What's New
Healthcare

Ah, networks. As reliable as they’ve gotten, there’s still the occasional hiccup. Speaking as someone who suffers from a bad VPN client, it’s very annoying to see a network transfer hang and not know if it’s just taking a long time or the connection is broken.

The 2012.2 Perforce release has a couple of handy new features that will alleviate that frustration. First, Perforce will give me a status indicator on the ‘sync’ and ‘submit’ commands. That way I’ll know if progress is being made when I’m transferring a big file.

Second, there’s a new configuration parameter, net.maxwait, that will determine how long to wait on a long running transfer. That means that a stalled ‘sync’ command will be closed after a while, so I don’t have to wait too long to find out that my VPN is broken again.

If you’re suffering from network hiccups, or just have to transfer big files a lot, grab the 2012.2 release and give these new features a try.
