The Best Practice Truth
My colleague Tony Smith posted a blog entry titled, The Best Practice Myth. He raises some solid points about the lack of universal applicability of any set of so-called best practices. I must, however, challenge Sir Tony to a duel, and debate him on this topic. (I don't think he's formally been knighted yet, but he's a really fine chap, so I'm sure it'll happen sooner or later). The thing is, in Consulting, we're often relied upon to be the Spewers of Best Practices. How can we do our job if there's no such thing as a best practice? One of my own favorite mantras of practicality is: Don't let "perfect" be the enemy of "good enough".
